Primary Care Resources
This area provides information and resources for Primary Care Professionals and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) to support the early identification and referral of patients with suspected cancer.
Given the shared focus on Early Cancer Diagnosis within both the Directed Enhanced Services (DES) Specification, and Cancer Quality and Outcomes Framework Quality Improvement indicators (QOF QI) for 2020/21, this section specifically outlines national and local resources to support PCNs and individual practices in delivering both the DES Specification and QOF QI.

Network Direct Enhanced Service (DES) Specification 2020/21
The Network DES specification aims to improve rates of early cancer diagnosis, encouraging collaboration between PCNs and the wider healthcare system.
It reflects the ambition of the NHS Long Term Plan to increase the proportion of people diagnosed with cancer at Stages 1 and 2.
It has a similar focus to 20/21 QOF QI, both recognising the pivotal role that GPs play in diagnosing cancer earlier.
The DES Specification has 3 key sections:
1) Referral practice
2) Contribute to improving local uptake of National Screening Programmes
3) Support delivery of the PCN specification through a Community of Practice
Dr Debbie Harvey outlines each section in detail:

The QOF QI has a similar focus on the early detection of cancer.
In the below video presentation, Dr Debbie Harvey provides an overview of the Cancer QOF QI indicators and outlines where colleagues can undertake work to meet the requirements of both the DES and QOF QI for 2020/21.
